CASA Advocate Heather LaTray embodies a deep commitment to the children she serves, especially two young boys of Native American descent on her current case. Raised on the Blackfeet Reservation amidst a large and loving family, Heather’s childhood provided her with stability and warmth, which contrasts sharply with the uncertainties faced by many children in foster care today.

Heather’s journey into advocacy was sparked by her own experiences, having emerged from a domestic violence situation. This background fueled her passion to stand up for children who face similar challenges, particularly those who are tribally enrolled or affiliated descendants, often overlooked in the foster care system. It is her hope to encourage other capable Native individuals to “step into this deep cultural purpose where intergenerational connection, elder guidance, and collective child-rearing is very much the norm rather than the exception.”

Her dedication is evident in the way she connects with the boys on her case. They share a love for playing Spiderman and proudly discuss their achievements at “school” (daycare), sparking a sense of pride in Heather for their resilience and spirit. Her own three sons and supportive husband provide a foundation of understanding and compassion, enriching her ability to nurture trust, safety, and respect with her CASA boys.

Recently, during a visit, Heather received her first hug from the boys—a poignant moment symbolizing the trust and bond she has cultivated with them. It’s clear Heather’s mission goes beyond legal advocacy; she strives to ensure these boys feel seen, treasured, and cared for in every interaction. Her goal is to foster not only safety and stability but also hope and opportunity, empowering them to envision and create a brighter future.

Heather LaTray’s story is one of resilience, empathy, and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Through her advocacy, she walks alongside them, building resilience, nurturing hope, and championing their right to a loving and supportive environment where they can thrive. Her CASA boys “inspire me to just keep doing my best to uplift others who need a little boost while pushing through the personal challenges that we all face.”

Thank you, Heather, for your dedicated work on behalf of children in foster care!
