I grew up in Florida and lived there until 2015, when my husband accepted a job in Houston. While Houston had incredible food that I still miss, we spent far too much time in the car because of how spread out the city is. We lived there until 2020, when my husband’s job transferred us to Billings. We have three kids, two dogs, two leopard geckos, and some fish. Watching my children grow has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I recently started school at Rocky to pursue Occupational Therapy, and after graduating, I hope to continue working within the foster community, either with children or in mental health.
I’ve found a community in Billings that I truly love. About four years ago, I became very involved in my children’s elementary school, and I now serve as the PTA president. I love supporting the staff and students in any way I can. Wanting to do more in the community led me to become a CASA in the fall of 2024. I believe you can never have too much kindness and compassion, and supporting children in foster care felt like a meaningful way to help spread both.
I chose a case involving newborns, and I’m happy to say the children are thriving and have been reunified with their mom. The little boy is the smelliest, sweetest guy, and while his sister makes you work a bit harder for her smiles, she is just as joyful. Before long, they’ll be running circles around all of us. I feel incredibly lucky and privileged to support this family as they continue to grow.
Because the kids were so young, much of my impact came through supporting their mom. She worked incredibly hard to reunify with her children, and even through some very difficult life events this past year, she persevered. Partnering with community organizations, Love & Sonshine in this case, has been a wonderful experience. Together, we were able to help her get what she needed for her new home and ensure she knew she had many people cheering her on.
The most gratifying part of this journey has been watching mom grow over the past year. I love visiting her and her children and seeing the strong, loving bond they share. The kids know she is their safe place and witnessing that relationship is truly special.
If you’re even considering becoming a CASA, don’t let doubts hold you back. I initially found the idea of going to court a bit daunting, but it has been a positive and rewarding experience. There is so much support from CASA staff and the judges, and it’s been an incredibly welcoming and encouraging community to be part of.
